IN BIG CORPORATES
Innovation and creativity requires a solid foundation and continuous support to grow and blossom. To compete in the age of the customer, it is necessary to graduate from leading incremental to transformational changes, requiring emphasis beyond core capabilities. The spirit of innovation may be part of your nature, but it still needs to be cultivated in corporates.
Given the pace of change it is important to look everywhere you can for innovative new ideas, and this absolutely includes looking inside the companies for ideas and for employees who want to contribute to innovation from wherever they are in the organization. But how does it work to find the most innovative employees inside a company.
That is one of our goals of our customized ‘intrapreneurship’ moduls – finding employees who think and act like entrepreneurs and giving them the tools and environment they need to contribute to innovation. Our focus on ‘intrapreneurship’ is helping corporates to create some structure around employee-driven innovation.
Our goal is to create a supportive environment in which employees can explore new ideas. Innovation isn’t only about developing a new product, it’s also about enabling and creating the conditions for innovation to thrive. People are looking for that ‘permission’ to share an idea and develop new things. That mindset needs a culture that supports it.
Let´s have a deeper look into one innovation initiative. Small teams of employees are assembled with different skills and from various departments. They have to be able to step away from their day jobs for ten weeks to join. As a team, they will learn some innovation processes and techniques, and built new products in response to business challenges we define. After 10 weeks we encourage them to go back to their day jobs and champion the innovation culture with their colleagues. Ultimately, people want the chance to be creative and build skills—it’s motivating and energizing. The fact that their solution will make a difference for colleagues or clients is what’s important to them.
Culture change is not only about developing innovation skills with a select group of people, it’s about having it go viral throughout the organization. Therefore it is very important to orchestrate all innovation initiatives to a holistic, integrated and sustainable innovation system.
But what is in for corporates? We are seeing the impact already in terms of people working differently after such initiatives. There is so much interest in building a strong innovation culture, from new graduates to senior leaders. We’ve seen intrapreneurs move to new roles where they can focus on introducing these new innovation approaches to their company. It’s a phenomenal example of change and what is possible. It’s also a great sign of the appetite around the companies for thinking in new ways, and it speaks to the need for intensive development of highest potential innovators. It´s also always amazing to see what employees come up with, and how many solutions like apps, platforms etc. are developed from inside out in such initiatives.
For every organization, it is important to cross-pollinate innovative thinking across their divisions and enable employees to step forward and connect with like-minded peers also outside of the company. The ability to mobilize the critical mass of intrapreneurs — employees who are passionate about innovation — is incredibly rewarding for all of us who run these programs. This is one reason why we love what we do and why we are so passionate about it.
